I have this 'Zinsser 1.2.3.' which is a sort of water based undercoat and protective coat stuff.
Sold to me as good for immediate application to steel after welding, protect the raw weld from corrosion.
But the instructions for surface preparation say to use on the one hand soapy water and on the other hand a 'solvent'.
Now I don't want to wash steel in soapy water.
My steel is usually covered with mill scale but could also have light corrosion, grease, oil, dirt.
What is a solvent in this context? Anything could be a solvent. Water dissolves things.
I'm thinking methylated spirits maybe?
